ShaperBox by Cableguys and Infiltrator by Devious Machines are a couple of VSTs that are useful for this type of functionality. Extra investment, but quite powerful devices.

Reason devices generally don't get updated as already mentioned.

Not necessary. However, for myself, I find that when creating melodies or chord sequences, sometimes the controller makes it easier to play more expressively than when drawing in notes with a mouse or keyboard.
