OT: just saw Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson at the Detroit Opera House
In my opinion, physicists and in particular, astrophysicists, blow a certain amount of smoke out of their bungholes. Especially the ones on TV. Always making grand statements about the origin and eventuality of the Universe, but presenting them as if they are simple, obvious facts that any fool cou...

Upfront vocals. (need help)
Great info, as always. :) BTW, I LOVE F**king science, even though I don't fully understand it! I wish I had paid more attention to the "engineer" part of "audio engineer" when I was at school. :frown: Many preamps have added an impedance selector in the past few decades, something I don't remember...

That means there is no real advantage of using the Cloudlifter when you have an SM7B and Balance.eusti wrote:Does that mean: "There is no real advantage of using the SM7b with Balance."?
Sorry for not understanding!

Do you thing I'm going to need Cloudlifter for sm7b with Ph Balance? Balance has an input impedance of 2.2kOhm and a S/N ratio of 83dB at full gain, the 150Ohm output impedance of the SM7b is also very low already so you'll probably hardly notice any difference. It might sound a bit different due t...

Almost undoubtedly yes. This is exactly what the CL1 was designed for! :) IF that noise is coming from the preamp. The Cloudlifter will basically only help if you have a noisy preamp (like some of the oldschool/"vintage" ones or very cheap ones) or have mic inputs with relatively low impedance (or ...

Funny, I wrote a VST/AU plugin like 8 or so years ago that did this right in the host ^^ Theres been multiple attempts at doing this already (somebody remember RocketAudio or whatsisname?). Still think that simply posting audio files / stems back and forth is easier, who wants to buy all plugins to ...

Cool story, cry me a river ;) Samples and coding are two different worlds. If they're so good why those RE are so bad? Cry me a river.. Don't know what that's supposed to mean. Anyway, these REs clearly state what they do and the techniques they implement are used by many professional studios and b...

Common Mixing Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Cool thanks. I know every mix is going to be treated differently and calls for different things, but how often would you say you (or anyone else) hard pan things? And also what is primary use for hard panning (is it mainly for pads, cymbals, doubled guitars, etc.)? Basically. Stereo outputs from s...

Steve Albini on the music industry
I've recently read the Cory Doctorow book, Information Does Not Want to Be Free , and his analysis of digital rights in general echoes much of what Albini says. (Doctorow's book is a decent read, though if you've been alive for a decent time and observant as changes have gone on around you, nothing...

Agree with what he says as well, especially this: From my part, I believe the very concept of exclusive intellectual property with respect to recorded music has come to a natural end, or something like an end. Technology has brought to a head a need to embrace the meaning of the word “release”, as i...

Audio examples are awfull. I'm very sceptic about that RE. Look at plugins market, it's very hard to make proper bass enhancer. This market is reserved for good audio developers with good skils and history behind: Waves, PSP, BBE, Noveltec etc. Hehe.. These guys have been around for a LONG time. Th...

I take it you're unfamiliar with Beck's latest album? Which is only sheet music, no audio recordings? Or the publishing industry that still publishes sheet music just as it has for centuries? Or that believe it or not, there are peopke that buy sheet music to play others songs for their own enjoyme...

They're different art forms. I own Fenders. They're great guitars. But they are PHYSICAL creations. They're not intellectual property. The DESIGN of the guitar is intellectual property, but the guitar itself is physical, and it enables musical creations to be performed on it. This is not the same t...

Are you kidding me Normen? You're essentially saying Leo Fender designing guitars is no different from Jeff Beck, Satriani or whoever creating melodies on the guitar? Creating a preset for an instrument is at best, making an instrument someone then creates music with. Writing lyrics, melodies an...

Zvork Volt SL-1 update coming (SDK 2.0 stuff)
Yeah, I think Wiz Audio did their SDK 2.0 update for TableOscillator to v 2.0 by releasing an entirely new version. That said, v 1.0 is no longer for sale in the Shop, so didn't they treat it as a logical progression as an "update"? Else there should be a version 1.0 still available, shouldn't th...

I second the notion that you should start at the source. If you don't open your mouth, keep too much distance from the mic and record in your bedroom you won't get an "upfront" "modern" recording. Especially the room sound on the mic is something that you can not fix at all anymore after the fact, e...

I think you're reading a lot into the word "content", but it's fine we disagree. It will most likely come to nothing but if there ever is a conflict it will be for some court or another to decide, and people interpreting language on a music forum probably won't hold much weight! ;) I said its wh...

But a community refill is very different in that it's mostly sounds and templates to create musical ideas, rather than lyrics, vocals, melodies, hooks and other unique musically performed components. I contributed to the Ochen K Chip84 refill and it's nothing like writing a vocal line or melodic ho...

So, by uploading something to Discover in the public domain you waive rights of ownership, according to Propellerhead? Doesn't this fly in the face of basic copyright laws concerning ownership of intellectual property?! :? No, you do not waive the right of ownership (please read the EULA part 3.1)....

As SDKs progress, and older REs become outdated, will their prices drop?
Hey, if you work at a company for a few years, do you take less money in the end because your work is now "outdated"? The word "outdated" only works for a certain set of things (mainly those that are in the "planned obsolescence" area of things). A shovel doesn't suddenly get "outdated".

Sure, most of these are fine, especially as they use line level on the analog side. Just be careful not to have too long cables with unbalanced connections (RCA, "mono" jacks) My personal experience with the ADA is that you need a lot of analog gain with mic inputs and that the S/N ratio becomes les...
