I've found the licenses to be backward compatible on an Ignition key, even if Online authorisation doesn't work.

Downloaded Reason 6.5.3 once to try it out and see what had changed and my R9 license on my ignition key loaded the Reason 6 app as licensed

Do a Time Machine backup and then reinstall OS X anew. Something you've installed has created a conflict. When you reinstall everything onto your clean base OS X, do Reason 5 first then keep trying it inbetween each piece of software you reinstall until you work out what breaks it.

In my experience, Reason needs a rack extension limiter like Ozone RE or an external limiter applied, like FabFilter Pro-L, to bring tracks up to the industry standard level of loudness without too much noticeable distortion.
