Re: Kilohearts suspended their RE efforts indefinitely

eXpanse was such a big effort, that was immediately undermined by the release of Europa. Let's just be glad we got VK-2, eXpanse and Zero. I think eXode has spoken a little about all this in the past here.

The scam is when they deliberately hide (or otherwise make difficult) the option to cancel membership. Audible are awful for this.

I'm subscribed to this guy - I find his videos useful and inspiring. He helps cut through the option paralysis I often get when I open a blank project.

New DX7 emulation from Plogue

OPS7 uses a freeform FM layout like Algoritm or FM8, but with accurate modelling of the nuances of the Yamaha electronics surrounding the FM architecture in those early synths. Loads DX7 patches.

Looks like a nice FM soft synth option.

Re: Which DAW should I get to replace Reason? (Windows only)

Depends what kind of thing you do most of! Ableton and Bitwig are so close you should definitely try both - they are nonlinear playgrounds, each with powerful sound design architectures (if you get m4l). I really like Live. The others are all variations on linear recording and sequencing software, w...

I think R11 might be the last version for me. I think maybe I'm an Ableton Live person now.

Re: Hardware or soft synths

Again, it's the weird nonlinear behaviours when feeding (or feeding back) audio rate signals into other places in analogue hardware that's still very difficult to find convincingly in software.

Re: Hardware or soft synths

Sound is probably not the most important reason most people use hardware instruments. Most would agree soft synths sound great now, but they just aren't as satisfying, gratifying, or fun as interacting with a hardware synth.

Re: Hardware or soft synths

I think it's mainly about the user experience, and the dedicated and constant interface.

In a DAW I can always get distracted doing the fun bits (usually messing with FX etc), whereas hardware forces me to actually make noise.

Re: The mysterious obsession with virtual channel strips

I too am baffled by the sheer unending quantity of channel strip plugins. Clearly, people fetishise them.

I do like to use Slick EQ to try and make myself listen rather than look.

And yes, professional people in any field are often just as susceptible to names and hype as the rest of us.

Re: Since the doors to RS are now open

Rex seems to be A Standard in loop/soundpack world, and it remains a great way of handling percussive loops. My theory is that ReCycle still exists because professional soundpack creators need it and it just works. Why more of its functionality hasn't made it into Reason, I don't understand. Even ju...

Re: Reason 12 has arrived

C2 looks like a massive upgrade for sound design, which has always been Reason's biggest strength. I look forward to seeing the new combinators! Someone can finally nail the Endless Smile/"Infinite Gurn" combinator I was trying to make but couldn't because of the lack of range and curve controls for...

Re: Bitwig crossgrade for 40% off

It's a tough decision between Bitwig and Live, and despite their obvious similarity I think it might even make sense to have both! I don't know how comparable M4L and the Grid are, but the Grid looks very accessible.

It's not that RS need to "find a way" to put the shop link somewhere logical like a normal website; they clearly don't want to.

I think the very old Akai granular timestretching is so iconic a sound that it should be a standard feature of all soft sampler devices.

It increasingly sounds like the "big proper library sampler" everyone keeps pining for might be the new combinator...

Re: Moog Subharmonicon getting a proper release?

I bought a Subharmonicon. Signal Sounds had a B-stock offer that was too good to refuse. I read a lot of opinions that the Mother-32 is the one to go for, because the SH is niche and weird and a one-trick pony. But that's why I was drawn to it, over the M32 and Dreadbox synths. I followed my instinc...

Re: Moving to Reaper from Reason

I know Reaper can run a LOT more instances of (X) VST on my computer than either Reason or Ableton. But I only use it as a tape machine for sampling - the UI is, indeed, horrible and not intuitive.
