Re: Assuming there's going be one, what you think is coming in Reason 13?
agreed—abandoning the DAW side to dive headfirst into hardware is complete nonsense (also don’t take personally). I don’t think anyone would expect the DAW to become comparable to others in a single or even 2-3 version updates, but they could go a long way in a single update by attacking some big ti...

Re: How many tracks have you finished this year?
by FAR my most prolific year. 21 songs released this year, by my count. I started out the year inspired by King Gizzard’s firehose-level of output, and made a conscious commitment to be more productive than my usual like 2 or 3 songs a year. really happy with how almost all of them turned out. the u...

Re: Life by XLN Audio
I don't use other 'creative samplers', so I could be off-base, but I think Life is very different than most of the RS tools in the space, due to whatever its 'AI' is doing to identify slices and put them into interesting patterns. I suspect the different RS Players and sampling REs work similarly to...

Re: So I jumped from Reason to Reaper... for some things
it’s honestly bizarre how they’re constantly improving Reaper, yet they never, ever seem to give any attention whatsoever to making the default settings more intuitive so that it’s easier to use right off the bat. it’s awesome. but holy shit, they’ve built a giant moat around the castle and filled i...

hot balls, this plugin is incredible. not the sort of thing I’d usually go for, but just awesome way to generate interesting new percussion parts to augment a song. and very, very fun. 🤯

Re: Life by XLN Audio
that looks pretty damn cool. I’ve been wondering whether we’d see anything new from XLN lately—glad to see they’re still doing stuff—they make many of my favorite plugins (RC20 has been on literally every song I’ve released for the last few years). might have to check this one out, since I’m going t...

Re: I Used to Be an Optimist (altronic-rock)
thanks! I used to spend a lot of time working to get every syllable of every word to sit perfectly audibly in a mix, but after listening to a lot of my favorite artists found myself constantly reminded that pretty often, I could only really hear the 'music' in the vocals, and not the words. it was a...

I Used to Be an Optimist (altronic-rock)
kinda fun sounding little tune, in spite of the topic (war/politics). might be the happiest I've ever been with backing vocals.

Re: Assuming there's going be one, what you think is coming in Reason 13?
disappointment. 😆 nah—I think they’ve acknowledged somewhere that the DAW and its workflow needs attention, so hopefully that finally manifests in what they’re doing. honestly can’t think of what else they would focus on. the last thing I think Reason needs is more RS devices, TBH, and they’ve spent...

Re: You Move Me (Indie Pop)
in fairness, I had to listen to that part 4 or 5 times to be sure *I* even felt like I’d heard something. it’s very subtle, and the more important point is that it’s a really good song.

Re: You Move Me (Indie Pop)
really nice! the backing vocals are great and gave me slightly chiller MGMT vibes. love the vocals, guitars, and arrangement. the key change sounds very slightly unnatural to me, for some reason—almost as if the instruments were pitched in the DAW after the fact as opposed to playing through the cha...

wow, thanks for all the great comments! I guess I shouldn't be surprised at the wide variety of 'reminds me of xyz'--but it does--and that's awesome. 🙂 the end section is purposeful, and if anyone had been watching as I'd read the comments they might've seen me visually recoil when I got to the wor...

A Song for Strange Times (acid country grunge elevator jazz...yeah.)
maybe one of the weirdest songs I've done. kinda went way out on this one--the bizarre song structure somehow manages to flow seamlessly between genres. really happy with how it turned out. somehow the genre-bending actually worked.

Re: What’s your decade?
came of age in the early/mid 90s, and definitely have an affinity for that era, but really, I didn't feel like I had a true listening 'home' until probably the early to mid 2000s. a lot of what I loved in the 90s was juvenile and gimmicky (nu metal), with a few exceptions (Fugazi, RATM). the 2000s t...

Re: Ableton Live 12
looks interesting, but never really needed the 'mixer view' in the arrangement, because all the controls are already there. the MIDI stuff seems like it would be very useful, but again, MIDI not being my primary tool, that's not a selling point. if they'd only added proprietary pitch editing, I migh...

Re: I can finally listen to RHCP and Rush (AI Vocal remover)
funny, the Chili Peppers were my first musical love. I didn't realize until probably Californication and later how much better the music was than the vocals. Anthony's 'singing' is at its best when he's rapping or sort of in between rapping and singing, with a couple of exceptions (Under the Bridge ...

Interesting parallel developments: Folks are moving away from accelerated systems like Pro Tools and UAD because modern CPUs have more than enough power for the biggest projects. At the same time, other folks are developing accelerated systems using the GPU to take the load off of the CPU… Film at ...

Re: Cubase 13 and Studio One 6.5
started using Cubase as my primary back in the spring, and other than a few quirks, I absolutely love it. it’s nearly as customizable (in the ways I find important) as Reaper, but without the ridiculous setup/learning curve. this update is awesome, and improves Cubase on a number of pain points. the...

Re: Open to suggestions and feedback (Weird song)
ooh, this is sinister as hell. 👏🏼 I could envision some haunting vocals (not necessarily lyrics, just like a doomy choir or staccato chants with maybe some cathedral-like reverb in a couple of spots). otherwise I think it’s really effective as it is! it sounds like it would be right at home in a War...

honestly, if you're getting a laptop, you're probably better off with a MacBook anyway. it's a known quantity and you know the quality is always on point. a thousand bucks for an M1 or comparable Mac laptop will still consistently outperform a lot of desktop PCs. I've bought a couple of PC laptops w...
