Film composer extraordinaire
From the NYT obit:
“The notion that I am a composer who writes a lot of things is true on one hand and not true on the other hand,” he said. “Maybe my time is better organized than many other people’s. But compared to classical composers like Bach, Frescobaldi, Palestrina or Mozart, I would define myself as unemployed.”
We just lost Ennio Morricone
He may have been unemployed but he wrote “for a few dollars more”.motuscott wrote: ↑06 Jul 2020Film composer extraordinaire

RIP Ennio. You fucking legend.
BTW, anyone interested in Morricone or The Good the Bad and the Ugly generally, should check out the lovely documentary Sad Hill Unearthed.

Nice to see A Fistful of Dynamite get a shout-out above. Still an under-rated movie. ("You taught me one thing: how to get fucked!") . Another great Morricone score too. And along similar lines, from arguably the best of comedy spaghettis (although the first Trinity film is pretty good, but that's not got an Ennio score so it can't be the best simply by that metric imo ), this is one also has some lovely themes, and is perhaps my fav Morricone score after all the major Leone collabs.
Britcom fans might recognize it from Nighty Night
Not seen Battle of Algiers since uni days. Great movie, need to add it to my rewatch list, but another ace score.
Oooh, live performance...
Pretty much everything in Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More is outstanding. I played the LP of that almost on a loop as a kid, until I finally got the CD of The Good The Bad and The Ugly soundtrack in the early 90s. Obviously I highlighted Ecstasy of Gold above as it's such a perfect meld of music, cinematography and editing, and of course the famous Main Theme is outstanding. But it's so easy to overlook every other piece of music in this film, where every track is astonishing, and there's a least one great piece in the movie that's not even on the damn album. Especially of note is the double-track of tense drama of The Desert, the incredible way it builds and builds and builds, but which then segues into the beautiful, haunting military dirge of Carriage of the Spirits is truly phenomenal. Absolutely the greatest soundtrack of all time. No question.
