I picked up a steinberg ur22 this week, after using an m-audio fast track ultra for years. I needed something more portable and sturdy. I'm amazed by the performance. This isn't to beat up steinberg in any way, but it's right there with the 8 year old FTU. Where I notice a difference is at higher buffer sizes >1024. The steinberg performs better there, but no discernable difference otherwise. It's a credit to m-audio I suppose. I can't believe my plastic turtle lasted so long, and really the only reason I'll be abandoning it eventually is to have a next-gen windows compatible unit.
Have a focusrite and a ur22 mki, basically the higher you go for an interface the more plugins you can have without increasing your buffer.
I'm not sure how that works but it works well enough you could leave your comp on balanced mode at 1/4 it's setclock and still get good results.

I think with the ftu having all 8 ins and outs enabled consistently affected performance as well.
