Wow! That's huge. I guess Sonar just wasn't competing well enough in Gibson's eyes.

So all the concern back in 2013 when Gibson purchased Cakewalk, with regards to Gibson's track record of killing software companies has proven to be well founded. I own a few of their plugins but abandoned their DAWs when they killed off Project5, so it doesn't impact too much on me but I'm sure there are a number of people for whom this is a huge blow. Anyway, I'd be surprised if there isn't a potential buyer out there somewhere...

Cakewalk CTO Noel Borthwick says that “Cakewalk’s servers will continue to operate, you will still have access to all of your online assets, and your software will continue to work normally.
But until when? When the servers will go down for sure (why pay for servers supporting a dead product forever?) they won't be able to access their own files? Wow!

Thank goodness for the RE format! I have the RE-2A and even if it is pulled from the shop, I will always have access with Propellerhead. I also have the CA-2A VST, and I suppose I'll continue to have access to that, until some time... But I have much more faith in the RE in my account.

I wonder if they will sell any tech to another company?

It's only a matter of time when they shut them down. For me the interesting question is - how am I supposed to activate Z3Ta+2 once they are turned off

As long as Propellerhead exists, sure :puf_wink:

The decision was made to better align with the company’s acquisition strategy BLAH BLAH BLAH.

I bought Sonar many years ago. Wasn't able to finish one track on it. Crashed such a lot. I know some people who were successful with that program but not me.

Must say I LOVE the RE-2A.

What I remember most is that Cakewalk was used a lot by non-tech savvy musicians who were just learning to make music on the PC. Never heard them complain about crashes though.

I was not a big fan of Sonar interface, but the RE2A is a top of best

I hope they can continue with another company

Maybe the Sonar team can rise from the ashes with a fresh new DAW - best of luck to them.

Sonar, along with Digital Performer, always felt like the "old guard" to me. Hard to imagine any new beginner choosing either in 2017.

Holy shit. Cakewalk was one of the earliest DAWs that I knew of. Seems crazy they'd kill it off.

I remember trying to download Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 on 28.8k AOL dialup from my mom's house in the 90's. Good times. Sort of. Actually, that sucked.

I was just going to post something to that effect.

This is a reminder that all that investment we are making on these plugins/DAW depends on the life of the company. Propellerhead isn't invincible...they can, and have made mistakes so Propellerheads better not let down there guard..

I will try to keep an eye on this cakewalk thing to see how they handle it in the long run. Let's see if they they are no longer developing/maintaining software plugins if they will allow user a free authorization code license or something?

Sad news for the employees but this is a real world teachable moment, we will see....

I feel bad for all of their users. Lately I've been playing piano rather than fiddle with DAW software - now it seems that is a more future-proof endeavor. As well, I am evaluating how much to invest in software. At least real gear will survive OS updates and can be mostly repaired or restored. But software gives you so much for so little money... Then again my Profire 610 that became a doorstop when the world lost its infatuation with firewire

Maybe they'll make the RE2A permanently free. https://shop.propellerheads.se/rack-ext ... amplifier/

Sonar is dead....long live Reason!

Just got the Reason 10 upgrade for £68.80 - a frigging bargain.
Pity about Cakewalk's Sonar - obviously it'll still work for me but it looks like I'm going to be investing more time using Reason (again).
Hopefully happy days (once I've installed it and figured the way to get the extra content off of my C drive).

Grum.

I'm in the same boat. I have kept Sonar up-to-date and handy though. In order to finish a piece a little while ago, I had to make it in Reason and then do the rest in Sonar.

Aesthetics, workflow, functions and features. It's a mix-and-match exercise. It's good that there is competition in the market, and different price-points so you can match your DAW to your budget. In the end though, it's all about the music, and I get the impression that sometimes the discussion is so much about the tech that discussion about the music gets kinda lost.

I hope all Cakewalk products will be released as open source. Make the world a better place.

I have heard that the RE-2A or CA-2A are coded by softube and cakewalk only licenced it. So this wouldn't be a surprise if the Compressor sounds good.

I compared the RE-2A to the Waves version. The RE-2A sounded way better imo.
