Hi everyone,

I've been playing with reason for a while now and want to distribute some of my (free) refills on my own website. I've made one for the polymodular system and also one for synapse's antidote synth. I've recently been working on a refill for blamsoft's Zero synthesizer, which I was hoping to sell in the propshop for a small fee (about 10 bucks). However, one of the requirements is that you need to have your own website. So I was hoping to build a site that features download links to the free refills as well as a link to this yet-to-be-released commercial refill. However, I don't know much about building websites. I was experimenting a bit with Wix, but I've found that they don't allow uploads of refill files, or even zip files for that matter! Does anyone know of a better website editor? Any help would be very much appreciated!

WordPress is a very quick and easy way of creating a site, and comes as standard with most hosting services. Recommend you check it out.
First of course, you have to register yourself a domain, you can do this too through the same hosting service.

thanks for your reply,
I remember looking into wordpress a couple of years ago but it seemed pretty complicated to me back then. Maybe it has evolved so I will have another look. I do remember having to install it to your domain, which is a problem because I registered the domain with Wix. As far as I can see they won't let me install anything else (other than a Wix site), and will only let me transfer the domain after 60 days.

Be aware that the 60 days period is not specific to Wix, it's part of the ICANN's rules: no tranfer can be done less than 60 days after creating or transfering a domain (so if you transfer it to, say, Wordpress in two months, there will be a new two-month delay during which you won't be able to transfer it elsewhere - this is to prevent various forms of abuse, like registrar-hopping).

I think that if you have at least a Premium plan with Wix, you can set up the DNS of the domain so that they point elsewhere - in english: you can create a new site with Wordpress, keep the domain at Wix for the time being and simply point the domain to Wordpress until the 60 days have passed, after which you can transfer the domain wherever you want. But again, that's only if you have the Premium plan. Otherwise, you'll have to either wait 60 days or settle for another domain name... (ask if you need help/clarification).

thanks for the helpful reply,

I had a Wix premium plan, but (d'oh) I cancelled it straight away yesterday because it didn't suit my needs. I got an email that I will be refunded (which is commendable I guess). I'm currently trying to see if their customer service will help me with the name server solution you were talking about.

Make sure they have created the domain name first. If they haven't, you can proceed with another hoster without their help. Honestly, the chances of that are slim but you never know.

Either:

- Go to http://whois.domaintools.com, type your domain name (without the "www") in the box and click Search. Depending on several factors, you may or may not get useful info. If you get "Domain not registered", you're in the clear!
- PM me your domain name, I'll do the same check but I can translate from techno-babble to english.

Thanks for your kind offer but the domain has definitely already been registered. I think I'll just go for another, similar name for now.

Check out namecheap.com. I used to be on godaddy.

One other thing to consider is hosting the refills on a file sharing site instead of your site. Then you provide a link to those files on your web page. That way, you don't eat up bandwidth on your hosted site, but let the file sharing site take the brunt. Not sure what to recommend exactly, but wanted to put it out there for others to comment on.
