i'd love to try unmuting mixer channels with a Kong or MIDI--is this possible? i'm having trouble even figuring out what terms to search for.

I don't follow why would you want to unmute with a kong? How did the channel get muted in the first place? What are you trying to do please explain because I can't see what your trying to do.
It is not too much of an ask for people or things to be the best version of itself!

i want to try putting a variety of things on various channels, then play with turning them on and off on the fly--play a mixer like an instrument i guess. does that make more sense? imagine all the channels off, then Kong pads triggering them on (or anything like that that's possible).

You can do this with more specialized tempting. Not sure if he panorama series can do this but I know I can with Maschine and MaschineR from ReTouch. Granted there's a ton of extra stuff built into that remote and helper app and Maschine isn't a cheap solution

Maybe this one helps. You can also trigger switching with an LFO. Note, that if you want something muted, you need to switch to an unassigned channel.

 that second one sounds ideal! 12 audio channels; "in instrument mode, you control the switch as if you were playing an instrument."

thank you!
