"Reason sound" tested :)
The 'Reason Sound' should have its own detailed Wiki page. So many people are invested into this, they deserve proper recognition, no matter your personal position regarding its existence or non existence.
Personally I want to believe it exists.
I want to be able to recognize it instantly anywhere in the world. From sea level and below to the tallest mountains, from the deepest forests to the most dangerous yet so beautiful African savannas.
"What was that!!??"
"That, my friend, was the Reason Sound."
"OHMYGAWD!"
"Be quiet! Don't let it hear you"
"......... ok......."

Yes, and maybe it doesn't make any difference to the success of the mix.....
"THE REASON SOUND HAS A NEGATIVE FREQUENCY -- ONLY MORONS CAN HEAR IT!"
I actually took the effort to do this to put those discussions to rest, because I don't believe in those claims. All DAWs produce and sum the sounds in exactly the same way, it's at the stage of using native instruments & effects where you can introduce their "own" sound, but that's pretty obvious I think...guitfnky wrote: ↑10 Jan 2019while I appreciate the spirit of such testing, it's sort of like going through the trouble of re-proving the spherical shape of the earth; you're not going to change the minds of anyone who thinks it's flat, and you don't need to change the minds of the less nutty/conspiracy-theory-minded of us.
The results kind of prove it - the votes are all over the place:
The files come from:
#1 - Reason 10.1
#2 - Bitwig 2.4
#3 - Live 10
#4 - Studio One 4.1
Thank you all for participating!
yep, understood. I just mean that it’s something others have proven in the past, and was having a bit of fun with the metaphor.
On the other hand, people thought the worst one being file 2, which kind of did sound a bit more unclean than the rest. And did think it's Reason. Well yeah, but if the file one was Reason, then you proved that it sounded the bestest for ME at least.
I know, but most tests I've seen were limited to mixing a single (or 2-3) audio samples, whereas I went a step further using VSTs. And it still sounds the same, at least to my ears.
We don't need to vote in that term, but just voting honestly IMO.
Well, define "honestly". Because if it's not a choice between best or worst, then we're left with very fuzzy and pretty arbitrary qualities like warm, cold, digital, analog, punchy, clinical
The whole point of this exercise was to prove there's no such thing as "Reason sound" and the votes pretty much confirm that.
If the files do null we should base our opinions on that. But I still said out that file 1 was the bestest for me to hear and the file 2 worst. The rest two were pretty much like identical. Just curious now about this reply though: viewtopic.php?p=427298#p427298antic604 wrote: ↑11 Jan 2019Well, define "honestly". I feel like voting at all is an indication that someone has accepted the premise that a “Reason sound” exists.
true! but then, why vote?
2 but they all sound very similar.antic604 wrote: ↑10 Jan 2019Yesterday a guy posted in Reason Users FB group that according to him Reason sounds sharper or harsher than other DAWs. The usual discussion ensued...
To get some hard data I've recreated the same simple "project" in 4 DAWs that I own (Bitwig 2.4, Live 10, Reason 10.2 and Studio One 4.1), using the same MIDI files and the same 6 VSTs with factory presets. I've not touched any faders (all at 0dB) or parameters anywhere, to ensure they play the same. All renders are 44kHz / 16bit. Standard routing applies, so eg. for Reason obviously all goes through SSL mixer, but it's untouched. Likewise there's no mixing whatsoever, no EQing, no side-chain compression, etc. so it sounds pretty shitty and there's even some clipping, because I couldn't turn down the patches
The project consists of (VST name / patch):
- pluck melody - Europa / Orbit Poly
- chords - Arturia DX7 V / Roards For Me
- bass - Synapse Dune 3 / Double Maker
- kick - NI Trk-01 Kick / Psy Zap
- hihats - U-He Zebra2 / Sleigh Hats
- master insert - Waves Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain / Mastering 1
The MIDI file, DAW project files and rendered wavs are at below link. Let's find out if anyone can say which file is from which DAW or at least which one is Reason
Good luck!!!

Main difference in DAWS are pan laws.
Reasons is 0 db.
It is all compensatable and just a volume/dither issue.
The dither would be too low to really asses anyways.
there is no “Reason sound”, and most everyone here knows it already. so if we already know it’s a myth, what would we even be basing our vote on?
I’ve officially lost it. I’m debating philosophy on a DAW messageboard.
