Best Source of Drones in Reason?
Hi Everyone,
I am hoping to find an easy good source of drone sounds for use in Reason. I have a bunch of VSTs that I can use for this purpose, but am curious what REs or Refills members here may have found good for this purpose - I would like to stay wholly within Reason, if possible.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

This little free RE can be used to make some nice drones: https://www.reasonstudios.com/shop/rack ... n/wbl5515/
And then of course there's Grain.

Complex-1 is my go to. I like a synth I can leave the gate open on.
Autolatch is a great utility as well.

I do a lot of drone stuff in Reason. A lot of the time it comes down to FX as much as the instrument, but if we're just talking about an instrument to begin with, then I like anything with lots of potential for modulating harmonics & making the sound move in interesting ways (either via CV or automation). So: Europa, Grain, Parsec, Nostromo, any of the big flagship synths will do a great job. Friktion is an absolute beast for scraping string drones, VK2 is fantastic for beefy analogue synth drones, Torsion gets nice and weird. But digging back through the older REs, I also like
AMMO 1200
Jiggery Pokery Harmonic Synth
FM4
Vecto
Revival
Also check out Wiz Audio Additive Oscillator, it's got 32 knobs & 32 sliders that enable you to modulate the offset & amplitude of 32 partials. You can get fantastic complex ringing drones, sounds a bit thin on its own but stack a few of them in a combinator (or combine them with other instruments) and you're in drone heaven

You'll probably find this useful. In particular the ambience patches should suit your use case -

That‘s also pretty easy with e.g. Thor. Just needs a single extra CV cable.
I got loads of milage out of the string harmonics in Orkester. Also the woodwind samples...oboe in particular.
You need to work on em with some fx processing but they have a nice organic sound.

not drone but generative and as a good friend said "Generative music is drone music with hole punched in"
I really like this refill which is featured in the below video..

Thanks for the support!
If you like the ReFills you'll probably enjoy the RE's as well. Aura-7 is pretty much soundscape focused and Zoetrope also contains lots of useful stuff for ambient/electronica production.
Happy music making!

I would guess almost any synth but especially ones like Thor, Complex, Grain, Europa with the modulation and Waveshaping possibilities.bharris22 wrote: ↑22 Mar 2021Hi Everyone,

After weeks of doing nothing but drones...Testing every synth I own...
Grain came out on top, as the most interesting option.
In fact, my brain is exploding with ideas of what sounds to try, as almost any sound can be used as a drone.

Grain is a powerhouse for sure. It’s got real character and loads of stuff to modulate etc.
It follows on from all the reaktor stuff abc so on but I think it’s better than anything else I’ve found just because it’s not a one trick pony.
Another interesting thing to try is plug an audiomaticretrotransformer into it set to eerie, w the pipes. Last setting on the bottom. Set it to about 50% wet and modulate the transformer knob. Adds a lot of flavour to a drone scape but really benefits from soothe vst by oeksound to tame the resonance.

In addition to the synths mentioned I've gotten good results out of Oberon, the osc morph function can produce some pretty far-out sounds and some of my favorite 'evolving' patches are made with it.

Audiomatic is definitely one my 'go tos' for weird stuff!
The other day I was listening to 'PVC' in headphones, and noticed some weird stereo stuff going on, that I hadn't noticed before. Headphones FTW!
That soothe vst sounds like a winner! Thanks!
