A comment in a thread sparked an idea so I tried it out and it's not too bad.

It's a pain that we can't automate the sample start knob in NNXT because it can do very cool things.

Using LFOs as gates and a Thor to scale the velocity of those gates you can sweep through your samples similar to a delay buffer, and also Rotary 1 on the Combinator can be automated. It's limited to the rate of the gates, you can try Rack Extensions with faster rates.

As you can imagine - with Rack Extensions this works better and even easier, but I made a Combinator anyone can use to demonstrate. Sorry if this has already been done and known about for some time : D

Try moving or automating the 'Sweep' (Rotary 1)

Thanks. It's not realy doing it though. When you start talking about what granular engines can do in Reaktor and MAX...we've never been able to make that in Reason. I don't mean granular effects, I mean the real deal. At the moment I think the best thing is to tweak the sample start knob and record the audio. It's a drag that you can't jump around properly, but that's all we've got.

Was only going for automating the sample start in NNXT :) We are long overdue for a RE SDK update!

But that's what I mean, I load a 3 min sample into an NNXT with your rig and I can't phase through it all. Unless I'm doing something wrong, which is very possible.

O- i have a contrary stance on this--maybe your missing what can be done in the audio sequencer lanes..
Set loop points to *min size* or roughly small time selections of around 1 to 50 ms.
- Remote loop points, bar forward/backwards-hotkeys for 'jump to left/right locators'.
Grab audio and scrub over loop points etc etc+add fx -- use the different timestretch algorithms and resample data for maximum effect =)
Now,enjoy "propa" granular synthesis.
I think I see what you're saying here but it still doesn't allow for recording the automation of what you do, you still have to record and edit the audio and with your method, I'm not even sure how you'd do that without using another app for recording via soundflower or some such. I know of ways to do it where you can't record the automation, only audio, but recording the automation is key IMO. Or more specifically having cv input for it. Then you're really away.

Sorry, I'm not trying to just shoot everything down here, I may just not be getting it, but I've wracked my brain in Reason over this for literally years and there is no, NO way of doing this properly as far as I can tell. And there bloody well should be at this point.

Oh yeah I agree about that. I'm talking about process here though not product. I get pretty assy about the work around for this one. Even though i've made a few successful tracks with it. Ah well, come on new SDK!

OK I'm totally with you now, I didn't think to load a much longer sample - in which case the 'scrub' or 'sweep' automation is limited to the knob's 127 stages.

Well it moves in percentges and by quite minute frames if you hit the shift-tweak option so trying to replicate things is no small feat. I tend to load quite long samples of stuff I've recorded and kind of fish around in there and see what I can pull out. Being able to automate the thing would change my life considerably.

I guess I'd still have to die in the end, but it would make the ride a little smoother, a bit more satisfying.

kind of off topic but related, i thought this was a great idea for an update on NNXT by txh003 on another thread, hope props hq are reading these posts eh ? ;).

If not a new synth, an updated NN-XT that excepts Kontakt, EXS and Sfz formats or a rompler on par with Sampletank and Nexus.
