Matrix pattern sequencer... how is this done?

In this video, he gets the Pattern sequencer to track keyboard notes (as an arpeggiator), for me it doesn't respond to note presses and simply spits out fixed pitch notes.

I'm a noob.

I found a clue down in the comments of the video...

Tried it and it seems to work.

What did you try so far?
IIRC, all you need to do is plug Matrix into Thor. MIDI from your keyboard plays Thor via MIDI, CV from Matrix plays Thor via CV. Hope I’m remembering correctly, I’m not currently in front of Reason to try for myself.

This is the comment that gave me a clue but I'm not sure it's gonna work.

For your suggestion... if MIDI from my keyboard plays Thor, the pitch from Matrix, doesn't that override the pitch from keyboard to Thor? I will try it anyway.

I don't think this works. If Matrix controls CV of Thor then it overrides Thor notes and the pitches come only from the Matrix.

I've done it!

The cruciall part is the Thor step sequencer... as the youtube commenter states... Thor step count should be set to 1. The Matrix sends Note CV out to Thor Sequencer Control CV in.

Matrix Gate out goes to Thor Step Seq Gate in (Trig)

Thor Sequencer set to 1 step and repeat.

Thor routing must be Midi Note to Step Seq Transpose 100%

In the video it can be seen that the pattern lengths are up to 24 steps while the Thor sequencer only goes to 16 steps. The pitch and the gating is from matrix and the midi keyboard transposes the Thor sequencer.

The Refill can also still be found in the webarchive: https://web.archive.org/web/20160806124 ... 7_Bass.htm

That's great! That will be useful. :)

You can easily do this with Subtractor or Maelstrom. Patch it up like this, then use your keyboard to transpose Subtractor's/Maelstrom's oscillators while the Matrix plays. I'm using a Spider to distribute the Gates to all the envelopes.

The modulation matrix of other Reason synths sometimes gives you access to oscillator pitch, but in my tests with Thor, the scaling of incoming pitch CV only goes to 100, not 127, and that prevents the oscillators from tracking the Matrix pitches properly.

I will build this setup. Thanks for your insight!

I am revisiting Reason for the first time in many years so tips and setups like this are very useful.

Yup, I've been re-listening to all the early Jarre albums again and using for inspiration with my synths.

Will be building a laser harp over the next few weeks too (based on plans floating around the instructibles site).
