808's Whats better

Ok i have RP punch, but just watched videos on jackbox and boom bass the 808 emulator. In your guys opinion, which emulates the 808 with the cleanest samples. I find Papens Punch difficult to work with but i still love it. I usually drop my 808 sounding kicks in an nnxt to map over the whole board. Something about the Punch just seems soooooo overwhelming or when i drop the volume, it just lacks the punch. I even have Red Rocks Bass Enhancer and still cant seem to get the sound i want out of punch.

I have Josh Levy's Boom 808 - do I have any reason now to get the 7R808 ? Boom 808 has tuning per instrument which I don't see on the 7R808 (?)

It's actually the only refill I use regularly, love it - everything is set up perfectly and Kong's tweakabilityism allows you to customise things how you want. 50 drum machines plus more! Such a tiny investment for what is included.

I'm having fun these days making 808-909 type of kicks and snares using Thor, Subtractor and Malström. Especially the 808 kick comes quite easily. The advantage of using synthesis is you can tune and fine tune it to perfectly fit in your mix. I haven't had much success with the Kong designer... Also, it doesn't have chromatic/Hz references which is such a shame.
With some tweaking you can literally make any type of kick! A few tricks I recommend are: use some sort of saturation, possibly following some decay contour, focus a lot on filters (BP and Comb to create the 'hollow' effect), a noise oscillator can also help a lot.

Noel G I just downloaded that and i love it. Really clean sounding. Thanks a million. Just having a hard time getting that clean sound out of the Punch although I use it for other drum sounds other than the 808 emulation. Never would have thought you could get that out of the Thor. I guess (to be truthfully honest) nothing really compares to Thor which i havent used in years.

But there are various approaches to emulating an 808 and they're all great fun.

You should check out this emulation that uses Thors. It's much better than other emulations I have tried.

I really like Boom 808. The bassdrum can sound really phat and round. I prefer it over samples because of the tweakability and the option to play a bassline with the bassdrum easily. I also have the Jackbox 808 which i dont use a whole lot anymore after getting Boom 808 but it's nice nonetheless.

Its great I agree - the only disadvantage is that you don't really have round robin samples so quick rolls etc. can sound a bit too "sampl-y". Thats why I got the Jackbox 808 as well, which alters the samples with each hit. If it sounds 100% like the real deal I can't say as I don't have the real device to make actual comparisons - I heard the 808 often and mixed it a fair few times and its good enough for me though
