vocodizer ... why not use a real vocoder?

Got the vocodizer in a bundle recently.
Let me get this straight, it's a monophonic vocoder with no ability to play a tune unless you use its built in arp or program one in?

I don't get it, either. Definitely not a rack extension that I'd purchase separately.
