Basically what the title says. When I first met Reason I remember getting some sweet sounds and effects from the Maelstrom synth, alas, my economy now only allows me to run R9essentials. :)

Hmmm, good question. I'm a pretty big malstrom fan myself, and I own a fair amount of RE's, but there is nothing that I know of that's exactly like it. Most RE wavetable synths have more traditional, synthetic sounding wavetables while malstrom's palette of tables is much broader.

If you're on a budget maybe try this one: https://shop.propellerheads.se/product/ ... nthesizer/
I remember trying it and liking it but skipping it because of the lack of cv ins (and already owning too many other RE synths). You won't find any "tin cans","chime" or "tibetan monks" (and other such exotic/sampled wavetables) in it though!

If you don't want a wavetable synth per se but just like malstom because of the warped digital sounds it can do, you have more choices... something like Noxious might also float your boat: https://shop.propellerheads.se/product/noxious/

I bought the Orbis... Thanks for good advice :)
Also got my clammy hands on the Blackpole, so I'm good for new instrument for the rest of the year I should hope. :D

Maelstrom was a huge inspiration for Nostromo. Just look at those knobs!

No problem! I haven't tried blackpole yet so I might give it a shot sometime soon. There's really a wealth of cool budget synths these days in reason, I barely have time to try them all!

Really? Wow... I guess everyone gets something different from Malstrom. I own a bunch of Lectric Panda Re's (Propulsion, Shape, PSQ and the recently the most awesome Fritz - Pomme Fritz is also one of my favourite albums!) so I had high hopes when I trialled it, but I'm afraid I have to admit I left slightly disappointed. It kind of has to do with the comment I made above about RE wavetable synths in reason about the diversity of wavetables - I remember scrolling through Nostromo's wavetables but I felt they sounded a bit too similar in "texture" for me. It's kind of hard to explain, but in Malstrom the graintables are so diverse in timbre.
Take the analogue feedback table, the outerspace, the metalcans or the thunder... if you play around with the motion, all kinds of crazy shifts in sound happen; it's really unpredictable. I couldn't get something quite like that from Nostromo, it does smooth and trippy really well, but I couldn't get it to go gnarly or twisted, which is why I ended up putting it in the "buy sometime on a sale" pile. I do remember loving all the LFO types, and the unison sounded great too, as well as the filter (now that you mention it I do remember going AHA! when I saw the AM/RM options). I was really dying to turn up some kind of overdrive/saturation on those filters... a switchable pre/post-filter waveshaping section like the malstrom's might have won me over...

No one prevents your from adding a shaper on an output and add than a filter. If you like moving in wavetables, you can try NN19 and autoamte it's Position knob. Its also capable of doing granular things.

It's not quite the same putting a shaper on a synths output... that works for monophonic patches but for polyphonic sounds I much prefer a per-voice waveshaper where each voice gets clipped/distorted seperately. This is how malstrom's (and thor and also expanse's for example) shaper section works.

By the way I hope you haven't taken my comment about Nostromo to be disparaging, as Nostromo is a quality synth and a really worthwhile addition to the reason arsenal. It's more of a crie de coeur than anything, since Nostromo came *really* close to being my ultimate synth ever.

Wow, Orbis is effing amazing! Subtractor, prepare for a holiday!

The control you have of each osc makes it possible to tweak almost endlessly to get the right sound, which I find really enthralling. Everything from simple monophonic like sounds to feeling you're off among the stars.

Thanks again Auryn, this will go along way to make up for Maelstrom! :D
