Is it possible to randomize a rack extension's parameters?

I'm looking for a way to do this with the Noise Engineering REs. Is this achievable using a combinator or other rack extension devices?

Thank you for any pointers!

Greg

Maybe this rack extension will help you?

Thanks, but isn't this just for randomizing MIDI?

try using thor synth re for randomizing.

Use Thor to randomize another rack extension?

yes

You could also use the Pulsar LFO and set its waveform to „random“.

yo. no problem.

if you see it appropriate you can check my file i created so you can easyly see how to do it.
here is the link to download the file: https://ufile.io/ir1sv3mp

was done in reason+ v12

thor has some oscilator cappabilities to make random sounds. so you just route that osc1 lets say to cv 1 out.
and then you connect thor's cv1out to your desired cv re destination.

The suggestions you're being given so far are about causing constant random changes, like having a random LFO modulate the pitch of the oscillator or the filter cutoff. What I think you want is a random patch generator. There are very few Reason devices that can randomize their values with a right-click (I only know of Redrum and Matrix). What you need is a way to generate several random CV values at once, lock them, and transmit those locked CV values to various parameters in the RE. You don't want those values to change until you randomize again.

So you need a trigger to activate the randomization (a button of some sort) and a source of random voltages.

I'm using Redrum as the trigger (I click on the Kick drum play button when I want a new random patch). I'm using eight VOLT SH-1's as the Sample and Hold (S&H) and four Pulsars as the Sample source (random waveform, each Pulsar has two LFO's so I only need four of them). I put the Pulsars into free run at a high rate and output their CVs to the Inputs of the VOLT SH-1's. Every time I send a trigger from Redrum (click the Kick drum play button), each VOLT samples the incoming random CV from a Pulsar and sends it to one of the CV inputs on the back of Sinc Versor. In this patch, I'm able to randomize eight of the Sinc Versor parameters. You can do them all just by explanding on this.

One thing about working this way is that the randomization isn't intelligent, so you'll get plenty of useless patches. One way to minimize the useless stuff is to adjust the CV amount knobs on the back of the RE to limit the range of change for a parameter. You can also putf this in a Combinator, which would give you even more control over the active range of randomization for any parameter. Also, if you use a Combinator, you can save your new and improved Sinc Vereor synth and load it anytime you need it, already patched up for random fun.

Wow! This example is so helpful. Going to be working on recreating this so I can learn. Much appreciated!

One can also write a tool to create fitting random .repatch files for the device. I think there have been at least two or three realisations of this already. For example Lectric Panda used to generate many patches for new synths: viewtopic.php?f=61&t=7521067

LaunchEon or Morpher.

You can't thank me later.

Any question? I'm all ears.

This looks promising but none of the download links work anymore. Thanks for the thought!

This is such a cool idea! I don't have the Volt SH-1 but it's only $9 so I'll probably get it. I think I follow what you are doing. Any chance you can send me this patch? Thanks a ton for the great idea.

I'll thank you now! Thanks. The morpher looks like a useful tool regardless! Though it doesn't do exactly what I'm after. LaunchEon looks incredible but also maybe a little too deep for what I need and expensive. Great to know about these though!

yay! Thanks so much. I realized that I have CV Freeze so I may try to substitute that in instead of SH-1

Here it is. I'm using Rytmik instead of Redrum to trigger, its buttons are bigger :)

That should work just fine.
