I actually started reminiscing about how long the term "progressive house" has been in use and the strange fact that the term stuck and still seems to mean the same thing, even though it's not all that descriptive. IE progressive house in my mind stands for "house or trance music that evolves slowly and is devoid of any overtly cheesy or gimmicky elements"
so, without wanting to derail the thread, here is an example of what "progressive house" meant 27 (!!) years ago:
