Does anyone have any experience using Parsec 2 as a vocoder? Any opinions how it stacks up against the likes of Izotope's VocalSynth or the original vocoder in Parsec 1?

I've used it, and it's fine. I'd even rank it above iZotope's (the carrier isn't as flexible as a full synth). But still my go-to is the BV-512. Supply your own synth (even Parsec), and modulator. It's a really good vocoder.

Additional: I will add that there are things you can do with Vocalsynth that you can't do with either BV-512 or Parsec. But it's vocoder module alone is just OK.

Fire up the wayback machine. Here's a really great into to the BV-512 in Reason (and Reason plus Record!). It covers vocoding drums too.

That's awesome! Are you using Parsec 1 or 2 for this? I currently have Parsec 1 and am debating if this upgrade would be worth it or not.

I love Parsec as a vocoder, and mostly prefer it over the BV512 - but only because it's just a different sort of vocoding sound (and much easier to get going compared to the BV512, IMHO, as there's really no wiring setup). iZotope's Vocal Synth is "ok", I suppose. I demo'd but couldn't be arsed into buying.

The upgrade cost from 1 to 2 is super cheap, IMHO, for what you get. Between the new presets, the drag-to-mod destination improvement, the displays - it's just a no-brainer. I say go for it:
  • Build your sound with 36 new generators, including resynthesized instruments and all of Thor’s wavetables.
  • Shape your sound with five new modifiers
  • Interactive displays: draw your filter curves, draw your pitch and partial envelopes, get visual feedback on all modifier parameters.
  • New modulation routings and an improved modulation interface: drag to the modulation destination
  • 200+ new patches
