I have the same MB Pro model - no way to improve. Trick with opening Reason in low-res mode doesn't work. The only way is to stick to other DAW, I switched to Studio One. Or wait for Reason code upgrade

Could always bounce to audio, but that would create more work if you had to change a part. The DSP issue I think can and will be fixed, just a matter of when. Bounce to audio just renders audio file. I am on macOS Sierra 10.12.6 on a MacBook Air 256SSD I5 8Gb RAM and do have not any problems with Reason 9.5.1.

I using a 128 gb usb Stick and a 128 gb SD-Card for ssd expansion. Mainly loops, songs, and RE on it.
