Can we step up against ear-damaging Ads on Youtube?
I'm sick of watching some video with dynamic audio, and then next some crazy loud, idiotic advertisement jumps in!!!
If a normal video starts playing, you have to click manually, so that sound gets unmuted! An Ad? Nah, it blasts right through, disrespecting privacy!
I think that ads that sound like a +6 to + 12 dB boost, especially in the highs, is very unhealthy!
Imagine a younger child with headphones on! The poor thing can't even react fast enough to protect his/her hearing!
Can anything be done to stop this bullshit? Some petition or something, so that youtube doesn't let advertisers trick the poorly working 12 LUFS integrated loudness? It's so incredibly dumb that humanity still is too primitive to stop the loudness war idiocy!

If it’s a deep dive into a vid, download it first. Rip it off Yt. Loads of apps that’ll do that (on a Mac anyway) and the adverts get left behind. Woohoo…

But sometimes I just like to watch videos randomly - I might not even like it after a few minutes or seconds.
Plus youtube might ban apps or their users that kill the ads.
Why would we have to adapt to their BS?
And again, for example, kids can be smart, but they won't easily bypass ads with a mobile device. Even most adults aren't tech savvy...

Adblockers.
Using uBlock origin for chrome or firefox also removes youtube ads and makes the whole web bearable again.
I have to look into reconfigureing add blockers. Last I recall you had to turn em off to watch Yt vids. But that was some time ago.
But yeah, I see your point. I mean adds are one thing but jamming that shit in your ear hole right in the middle of things is nuts.

Not while using OperaMini... And it technically already blocks ads.
Still wondering why WE have to adapt to the industry's tyranny...
On Opera PC, I think ABP did the trick, too. Still, hiding away won't make the deafening problem go away.
But I mean on mobile devices. I use youtube almost exclusively on my phone for example.
Adblock Plus usually found a way around these. Maybe if they would make advertisements less aggressive, we'd tolerate them more.
(They literally hire psychologists and research what ways they can get into people's heads... Things are getting out of hand more than ever.)
It's especially the shit, when at night our hearing becomes very sensitive...

Technology advances rapidly though ~ as soon as a website sniffs out that the special Ad-evasion, they may ban us from accessing the website.

Well, depends. Does it save data? Opera Mini can sometimes do even 90%, so there's a tradeoff.PhillipOrdonez wrote: ↑26 Jan 2023Your choice. But in telling you from experience. Just try it and thank me later.
But nobody seems to think about finding a way to force advertisers to be quieter. It usually takes a first step to achieve something. Though if nobody cares, and just runs away, then yeah, nothing will ever change, lol.
I haven't seen an ad on youtube in years, used to use an adblocker but now use Brave Browser

Find out yourself. I use brave on mobile for YouTube on incognito mode only. I have no idea about data and shit. It just gets deleted once i close the browser, right? ♂️RobC wrote: ↑26 Jan 2023Well, depends. Does it save data? I find the level from video to video to vary as much as the ads. When I’m on youtube I basically ride levels like I’m running live sound! I always try to mute the ads completely so I’m actually less aware of their volume issues. I’m also hyper aware of when I have my monitors cranked to extreme levels, so I don’t often get caught by loud sources.
It helps that my monitor controls are inches away from my keyboard/hands at all times, and that to mute the system all I have to do is push in the big volume knob (Apollo hardware).
All to say, there are multiple ways to deal with this issue and even the ‘automatic’ solutions aren’t 100% reliable, and I don’t expect that to change any time soon. So I rely on myself to do the work, at least for now.

Aside from blocking ads, you could maybe try something like this?
This is an extension for Chrome. I haven't used it.
Youtube Audio Compressor
I'm guessing there might be apps for whatever OS that can limit all audio to the main output? I agree that aside from ads, videos can very greatly in volume too.

I use the volume button on my phone, too - I kind of miss that my previous smartphone let me remove the battery. If something got irritatingly loud, I could just throw it against the wall, and the battery fell out. x Dselig wrote: ↑26 Jan 2023I find the level from video to video to vary as much as the ads. On phone, the ads automatically unmute, so they do some filthy tricks. Volume changes there are slow enough to hear at least a bit of the pathetic ads.
That said, I usually turn the volume down to zero for each video - unless I forget to. : S
Well, they still could develop the Loudness Unit measurements further, so that it can't be tricked so easily. It's too forgiving, the way it works. Then again, videos that I watch, hit the -12 LU, and they are fairly balanced ~ yet when an ad kicks in, it's magically a lot louder, so there might be something fishy going on.
I pretty much only use youtube on android. It's kind of sad, that we have to defend ourselves against ads.joeyluck wrote: ↑26 Jan 2023Aside from blocking ads, you could maybe try something like this?

I just don't get why they can't make creative ads with decent volume...
I get so much value out of YouTube that I plumped for a premium subscription. No ads (except for the ones the video creators include of course, but that's plenty for me.) Being able to listen with the screen off is very nice.
Not an option for everyone, I know.

And yet that still doesn't eliminate the hyper compressed audio issue... x D
