Are there any sites that benchmark M1 chips against PC chips?

I couldn't even chose an i9 to go against the M1 seems fishy.

Nothing fishy. Apple just made some clever calls (some of which Intel were already working on) but got the jump on everyone else (just look for Intel's presentations on their upcoming architecture). Where you used to have lots of distance between the CPU and RAM, the M1 simply doesn't. And since you're more often memory than CPU bound, you get a CPU boost for free. By going ARM they benefit from being able to do away with all of the x86 cruft, so their CPUs are even more lean and efficient.

The M1 was getting comparable Machine Learning training performance as an NVidia T4, which is saying something.

We've known the potential gains for years. Nintendo was one of the first to edge towards a SoC. Sony did it with the PS5 (and gave us a preview with the PS3).

The architecture we've been using for the last 40 years has lost of vestigial baggage that's far more complex to resolve than it is to start from a more blank slate. Also bear in mind that CPUs evolve quite slowly. Lots of incremental steps for a decade or so while they work on the next major chipset design. It's sort of like game consoles. You get the N64, and then the N64 mini. Or like what Nintendo did with the Wii (which was pretty much a GameCube clocked 50% faster with a few new GPU features). They did the same with the SNES - basically a 16-bit version of the NES CPU running at twice the speed with more advanced onboard graphics effects and more sophisticated cartridge processing (the NES also featured cartridge assistance for the same reasons but was much simpler).

Easy to predict.

My 2012 iPad is still working fine. Very happy with it. Maybe in 2022 I'll get an iPad Pro.
Apple will move their pro line From x86 to ARM CPUs (what's inside their iPad Pro) eventually. They moved from PowerPC to Intel in the past and I expect them to do the same since their chip is so powerful. It would not be too far-fetched to imagine they already have a fully functioning OS XI running their main apps in their lab already.
Don't be mad at Apple for their 'culture'. Their '1984' Macintosh commercial was very explicit back then (Us Vs Them).
Apple is a phone making company.
Making computers is not their primary objective anymore.
Enjoy your Apple watch (the most sold watch in the world).
Buy whatever that makes you happy first. Who cares about people who can't afford Apple products amirite? :geek:

Not a rant.

I have a MacBook Air M1. It's super light, super powerful (more than most desktop pcs), has great battery life and is completely silent. It's a technological marvel.

If you have the money, I'd say go for it...i have been a Mac user since 2011, and compared to the experience ive had with windows the Mac just gets the job done, whereas windows will do crazy stuff like starting to update at random times, throwing random notifications etc...the biggest draw for a musician is the audio midi setup of a Mac, it's built into the os, you can create an aggregate audio device where you can select whatever inputs and outputs you want from different audio hardware. And then select that aggregate device as the audio device of your DAW, and it just works, you can have 2 or 3 audio interfaces, usb microphones etc...and you can use all of this IO together.

The Mac Studio sounds amazing. You don't necessarily need it though for Reason or most music production IMO. A Mac Mini or any flavor of MacBook will do the job. Get it if you can, but don't get caught up in the cost if it's not in your budget

Of course...thanks Joey...soon enough the software will need that kind of power...how else are they going to sell this expensive hardware...

The only people who can justify paying $6000 for complete accessories are Pro studios and Professional video editors or you’re super rich with money to blow.

Yeah it starts at $1999 and it's an absolute beast with the standard configuration, especially for music production. The only thing I would consider is choosing a larger SSD.

Yeah no keyboard, mouse $300 + monitor which cost $1600 + 1tb ssd $200 = $2100 for accessories with base price equals $4,099 plus tax.

And from what I've read so far it can out perform their 28 core Xeon Mac Pro - my only complaint is the box only contains
  • 1 Mac Studio
  • 1 power cable
I would suggest that for the price they really need to include a keyboard and mouse.

And I wish they would bring back the wired Mighty Mouse and USB keyboard I really don't like the wireless keyboard and mouse setup.

You can use any keyboard, mouse/trackpad, and monitor you want. I recommend the Magic Trackpad. But if it's too much computer for the user, the Mac Mini or a MacBook will still outperform many other options.

Main limitation on a Mac mini with the M1 is it maxes out at 16GB of ram. I’ve got 16 in my current MacBook and I can tell working with larger sound libraries is maxing it out.

No, a 2018 Intel one.
