buffer size = 1024

Welcome to the forum Dezma and thanks for posting your result!
If you ever OC your CPU, please retest and share again :) . Most probably an OverClock of 3.9-4.1 Ghz on all 6 cores would play the whole song without stopping.

How much did you spent on this PC?

PS. Was the CPU Usage Limit set to 95% in Reason's settings and sample rate 44100 Hz?

Thank you!

This build was around 1900, VAT inc. I saved some money to upgrade RAM later on once DDR4 gets affordable.

I did not bother OC'ing yet because I have the gigabyte motherboard that has issues to go into bios (without removing HDD's up front that is).

I also had this computer built in a very silent configuration after a few years on an I7 laptop with the fans permanently on. I let go of the idea a laptop can replace a desktop for top CPU / GPU performance (so producing and gaming). Not in this price range anyway and if it gets near, the fans will drive you nuts.

Once gigabyte fixes their bug I will try again.

95% 44.1khz was used indeed.

BTW, my viddy card is fine, but there is something that is causing CPU issues. On the prowl.....might have some answers soon.
Kategra wrote:
It's normal to have the crackles midway in the benchmark. We all have it. What is important in the benchmark is the result (where the playback stops).
I guess only a CPU at least 2 times more powerful than the current top 6-8 cores CPUs would play the benchmark completly and without any crackles, even at good latency.
Thanks, I feel a little better now.

Macbook Pro
2.2GHz i7-4770HQ
16GB RAM
Built-In Audio
Buffer Size 1024: Stop at 28:653
Buffer Size 4096: Stop at 39:600

Someone has the upgraded version with 2.8GHz i7-4980HQ?
I would really like to know if the upgrade is worth it, because I am not happy at all with my current setup.

It's probably a dual core CPU, hence the limitation.

Ok, I'm starting to be VERY confused. I just optimized my settings (some video stuff that was obviously an issue) and it is helping in my "general" performance. But I ran the 8.2 test again with the same settings and got WAY worse performance.

Now I'm just paranoid. There has to be a logical reason for the discrepancy, but there isn't one I'm aware of. And considering how poorly (not even at all) 8.3 ran, I don't have any idea how to proceed.

8.3 is still in beta as far as I know and has extra logging that is active which brings performance way down.

For optimizations, follow this guide step by step (where applicable).  https://www.ableton.com/en/help/article ... e-windows/

CPU : I7-3770K @ stock speed
RAM : 16Gb (Was 32. Awaiting a replacement from Corsair)
Audio Interface : Propellerhead Balance

Tests run at 44.1K and 95% CPU

Buffer at Max 4096 = 26.3.3.37 = 0:00:51:270

Buffer at 1024 = 23.2.3.79 = 0:00:44:791

At a more normal Buffer of 128 = 20.1.3.131 = 0:00:38:319

....and at 64 = 18.2.1.84 = 0:00:34.544

Considering I built this PC nearly 3 years ago, I'm still quite pleased with its performance.

EDIT : I've just noticed some discussion about graphics cards. I'm just running this with the integrated Intel HD4000 with dual monitors. I did look into a fanless/silent card to drive 3 monitors, but up until now I haven't really needed it.

Nope.  The current beta (d82) is a release candidate without logging.  Should run as fast as what will eventually retail release...

Well, currently I'm not the foremost authority anyways. I thought I had this thing ticking like a fine oiled machine a few weeks ago.......now I don't know what the heck is going on. Nothing keeping me from making music, but strange stuff indeed.

So...  random stuff: I just tried to run this on release 8.3, and in a  brand new (but still pretty underpowered) macbook pro (dual core 3.1 ghz i7, 16g)  and I get the message on load... even before I press play... once i press play it won't do even a bar...

that doesn't seem normal... right???

Played the whole Song with 3 DSP Bars

CPU usage limit set in Reason 8.3 = 95%
Sample rate = 44,100 Hz
Buffer length = 180 samples
Hardware:
CPU i7 5960x @ 4,5 Ghz
RAM 16 GB

Does not seem normal. Maybe you didn't setup it with a large buffer >512 samples and 44100 Hz sample rate?

 Only 180 ms and 3 DSP bars! Now I know that my new build is going to have an 8 core Intel in it. Just waiting for 8 core to hit mainstream platform. Thanks a lot for posting this!!!!

You make spending +$1000 USD on a CPU very tempting... I am doing a new build later this summer and I am struggling with that idea or settling for the 5930K at half the cost, or the 5820K at 1/3 the cost.

Knowing that I will inevitably do another new build 3-4 years down the line, I just can't bring myself to drop that kind of cash for the 5960x, as the annual "cost of ownership" is insane to me.   :frown:  That said... I have been known to do insane things LOL!

Same here, I think it's best to go for a high end cpu every 3-4 years, but not the "ultra high end" stuff that's priced at double the previous tier.

I'm running 44.1kHz and 4096 sample and it still won't go. Does anybody have a  similar  setup, cpu is   3.1 GHz Core i7 (I7-5557U), with 16gb RAM? Can you guys run the benchmark?

That's a recently released CPU, isn't it?  Like Q1 of 2015?  It stacks up pretty slow to even my 3 year old 3770k:

But yeah, the fact that you can't even play the songfile seems weird.  Are you able to try it with Reason 8.2?

There was another post here, that hasn't been carried over in the migration, that mentioned running the test again now 8.3 has been released. Nothing has changed on the system between the tests. So here are the results:

Buffer at Max 4096 :
8.2 = 0:00:51:270
8.3 = 0:00:51:132

Buffer at 1024 :
8.2 = 0:00:44:791
8.3 = 0:00:44:531

Buffer at 128 :
8.2 = 0:00:38:319
8.3 = 0:00:38:208

Buffer at 64 :
8.2 = 0:00:34.544
8.3 = 0:00:33:972

All results are pretty much comparable, with around a 0.1 or 0.2 second difference. The largest difference is with the buffer at 64, giving a difference of around half a second. However, results did vary when running tests several times, with marginally better results reported occasionally.

Did the benchmark file get lost in the site upgrade? or have i been hitting the bottle too hard? I can't find it!

It depends on which cpu generation you currently have. What year model? I have a 2.2 also and your result is better so i presume you have the ivy bridge or do you have the current haswell? 2.8 ghz will give you 25% better performance roughly. If it's a newer architecture chip it would be more like 30%. If you wait for skylake 3ghz it will be more like 40%+ - which is what i am trying to hold on for as that will be about 50%+ difference to mine.
