Plugin Review: Little Plate by Soundtoys

While Soundtoys have been putting out amazing effects plugins for quite a while now, one notable absence from their lineup has been reverb. That omission has been shored up with the release of Little Plate, the latest addition to the Soundtoys lineup and their “Little” plugin series.

Little Plate is an emulation of the classic EMT 140 plate reverb unit, but also pushes the limits of the original unit. The most notable addition is an infinite decay time, while the original unit could only manage up to five seconds of reverberation time.

As with the other plugins in the “Little” series, Little Plate strikes a balance between simplicity and flexibility. With only three knobs and a switch on the panel (not including the standard preset browser on all Soundtoys plugins), you can get a huge array of responses that will work in anything from a heavy rock song (as I’ve done in my video) to a lush ambient soundscape.

The sound itself is a dark and rich reverb, which can be tamed nicely by the included low cut knob that goes from 20Hz to 1kHz. It pairs nicely with a drum kit – I love it on snare – or vocals. I prefer to use my reverbs as send effects, but you can just as easily add it as an insert to a track and dial back the wetness using the standard mix knob.

Also included is a mod switch, which introduces subtle variations and modulations to the return. This gets sweeter as you increase the decay time, and it’s definitely worth fiddling with.

Little Plate is free from Soundtoys on their website until November 22nd, 2017. After that time, it will be $99. You will need a free iLok account to activate the license (note: you do not need an iLok dongle to use this plugin).

Even if you are thinking that you really don’t need another reverb plugin, grab this one – you can’t go wrong with Soundtoys. Not only is the quality great, this is a must-get if you are ever planning on upgrading to a Soundtoys bundle in the future. Oftentimes the company will offer an upgrade path from a free plugin, so you could potentially save down the line. Seems like a good deal to me!

I hope everyone enjoys this plugin as much as I do! I’d love to hear what other people are doing with it, so feel free to reach out to me with your creations!
